BIG CROWDS

Friday, Nov. 18 was  the beginning of the downtown retailers' holiday offerings and sales. Several store owners saw good crowds on Friday, said Glenn Coleman, executive director of the Carmi Chamber of Commerce, which produces the annual Christmas festival, and even bigger crowds were present Saturday. In addition to shopping, residents were out to register for a chance to win a grand prize valued at more than $700. Jo Haley, who coordinated the retail Holiday Stroll contest, said many of the 11 "Stroll" stores ran out of contest entry sheets. More than 1,000 entry forms had been printed, she said.

One happy retailer was Tony Stein, owner of Stein's Flowers, who said he had "the best Saturday in 10 years."

"That's one of the things we hope to hear about the festival," Coleman said.

"Good local sales help retailers realize profit on their business but also mean local residents are pleased with the purchases they made."
